Born Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1961)

Biography
Murillo Meirelles joined the world of photography in the 1990's and has since become a celebrated fashion and commercial photographer based in Rio de Janeiro. He has published editorials and photo-essays in magazines such as I-D, Dune, Pen, Key, S/N, Mag, Rolling Stone Brazil, Rolling Stone Spain, Vogue Brazil, Trip and TPM, among others, and has shot campaigns for several brands in Brazil and abroad, including Nike, Osklen, Reinaldo Lourenço, NK Store, Cavalera, Triton, Blue Man, Rosa Cha, Sandpiper, Farm, Women Secret, M Missoni, Arezzo, and Yes Brazil.

According to Martha Pagy, his existing dealer in the Brazilian market, Murillo focuses his personal work on bridging the gap between the so-called "productive" and "marginal" sectors of Brazilian society. Murillo's projects invariably involve fieldwork with children, youth and adults from the margins of society, and articulate an appreciation of their culture, habits and beliefs. By portraying in his works characters from outlying communities, Murillo deals with issues of values, ethics and citizenship, stimulating awareness and pointing to the possibility of using art as a tool for social transformation.
